With the increased time spent at home, many homeowners are opting for remodeling and renovating. According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, “buildings of any age may contain ACM [asbestos-containing materials]; even those newly built” (CDPHE). No matter the age of the home, asbestos could be a potential hazard.
What materials could contain asbestos?
Many materials in the home have the potential to contain asbestos. Asbestos is commonly found in ceiling and drywall textures, vinyl flooring and mastic, pipe and duct insulation, ceiling tiles, roofing products, and many others (CDPHE). If you plan on removing or damaging any material that is not solid wood, glass, steel, rubber, or styrofoam, it may have the potential of being asbestos containing.
Who should test for asbestos?
If asbestos testing is required, testing must be completed by a Colorado-certified asbestos inspector prior to any renovation or demolition activities. Failure to complete testing may cause delays and potential monetary penalties.
What if the inspector finds asbestos?
If asbestos containing materials are found and you want to move forward with remodeling efforts, the asbestos materials must be removed by a Colorado-certified GAC.
